Antonio Decaro, mayor of Bari since 2014, has been living under surveillance since 2016




Antonio Decaro53 years old, engineer, is the mayor of the city Bari, the city where he was born, since June 8, 2014. He was elected as a representative the year before. He has been living under surveillance since 2016 due to mafia threats he received. He is married and has two daughters.


At the age of 25, he graduated in civil engineering, transport section. Working as a freelancer, he works at the Polytechnic of Bari and at the age of 29 he becomes deputy head of the department of the Pugliese Aqueduct. In 2000, he started working with Anas as director of services for department technicians, director of the Bari Provincial Maintenance Center and regional director of the Project Office.


In 2004, the mayor of Bari, Michele Emiliano, in his first council, appointed him councilor for mobility and transport of the municipality of Bari as an external technical expert. In 2008, thanks to the numerous interventions carried out, he received the “Friend of the Bicycle” award from Fiab (Italian Federation of Friends of the Bicycle). In the same year, Legambiente awarded him “Environmentalist of the Year 2008”.


In 2010, he was elected regional councilor incl Puglia in the district of Bari. He held the role of leader of the Democratic Party group in the region until April 2013, retaining the role of delegated councilor for mobility free of charge. During his mandate in the region, he was a promoter of legislative proposals approved by the regional council on IT plurality and on the adoption and dissemination of free software and on the hospitality activities of extended hotels. Among the legislative proposals he worked on are the establishment of a public register of elected representatives and transparency and information.


In November 2012, the law “Intervention to support the development of bicycle mobility” was approved in the Regional Council, of which he was the first signatory.

In December 2012, he ran for parliament for the Democratic Party, and was the first to be elected in the male component.

On March 15, 2013, with the beginning of XVII. election period, he was declared a deputy of the Italian Republic. In parliament, he was a member of the parliamentary intergroup for new mobility/mobility by bicycle and, together with other MPs, participated in writing the national law on bicycle mobility. On January 11, 2014, he ran for mayor of Bari, on June 8, 2014, he was elected mayor of Bari in the second round.


In June 2014, he was appointed as a member of ANCI within the State-City Local Autonomy and Unified Conference. Since January 1, 2015, he has been the mayor of the metropolitan city of Bari.


On 29 January 2015, he was appointed Vice-President of Anci Nazionale with responsibility for “Southern Italy and Territorial Cohesion Policies” and a member of the Committee of the Regions, an advisory body of the European Union based in Brussels that gives voice to regional and local authorities. Since August 2016, he is the chairman of the Petruzzelli and Theaters Foundation of Bari. He has been president of Anci since October 2016: the election took place during the work of the 33rd National Assembly held in Bari, from October 12 to 14. Since June 2018, he has been a member of the board of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti. He was reconfirmed as mayor in the 2019 municipal elections, defeating his center-right opponent Pasquale Di Rello in the first round with 66.27% of the vote (more than 40 points behind him).
